Training mats

One of the main reasons I enjoy training is that Wado-Ryu owes some of its development from Jujitsu. This, to my mind, makes Wado a more practical than some other techniques and offers people a real chance to learn to defend themselves. I am always pleased when we can spend some time working on the grappling side of combat and think that this is an element often overlooked in the training of more traditional styles.
Given that most fights will take place in a clinch and/or ground situation it is a huge boon that we can practice some of the defence (and attack) techniques from these positions.
In order to really get some advantage from this training, and to facilitate sparring with sweeps and takedowns, I think that it is time we invested in some training mats. Ken and the club have already sank a great deal of time and money into equipping us with two gargantuan kick bags that I am really looking forward having a pop at. Therefore, I am proposing that as members of the club we could contribute some of our own hard earned cash towards this equipment.
When you consider the negligible costs of the lessons, and through Ken's ill-fortune, that we have been able to train for free for weeks I do not think this is too much to ask. I propose that we look to contribute between £10 and £20 per person, which has yet to be decided. If 10 people contributed £15 that would g a long way to equipping the dojo I think.
Please let both ken and myself know what you think.
Thanks,
Kevin.

You know I am well up for this. I think we will all get a great deal out of being able to do more groundwork in our classes and as you say, given how little we currently have to contribute for our lessons, it really isn't too much to ask - given what we will get out of it.

I've had a look around on the web quite a bit and can only really see those 40mm jigsaw mats, that seem to come in at about £30-£35, haven't seen anything thicker than that.

How many mats would we need do you think? I'm thinking 3 square meters (nine mats) or should we get enough to cover the whole Dojo?

I've had a look on the web as well, and buying new it looks to be around £35-40 per square metre for the 40-50mm thickness mats. Assuming we would need around 9 square metres (i.e. 3 mats by 3 square) this works out at about £320 - 360 in total. With ten fairly regular attendees at the moment (Ken, Tommy, me, Kevin, Ian, Dave, Matt, Linda, Gary and Peter) this actually works out at about £35 per head - unless we can find some cheaper mats?
One other thought - where would we store them? Is there room in the storeroom?

The other option is getting them off ebay. Can get the 40mm mats for £20 a go on there (link here)-
from a reputable store not an indiviual seller. I've mailed them to see
what the postage may be, or we may be able to collect them if anyone
fancies going to Perivale.

OK, got a reply from the guy. Cost for 9 mats will be £195 including delivery (and all all mats come complete with edging).
I am happy to order these as I have an ebay account already set up, but only after someone has collected the money.
